Ontario Employment Education & Research Centre
In late 2009, Maytree confirmed the Ontario Employment Education & Research Centre (OEERC) as one of its funded partners. The foundation will support OEERC with an annual grant so the organization can provide information, education and support to newcomers, women, immigrant and racialized workers about their rights at work and how to address workplace problems.
About OEERC
Among other things, OEERC’s objectives are to establish and operate information services and supports to educate workers about their rights at work and to assist with resolving workplace problems; to produce educational materials and other resources to educate workers about their rights under Canadian employment legislation; and to conduct research into the violation of legislated rights at work and to communicate the results of this research to federal, provincial and local government agencies, community organizations and other interested individuals and groups.
The Centre does this with the following programs:
- Operation of a “Workers’ Rights Information Line” in association with the Workers’ Action Centre, where workers can call and get information and support about a problem in their workplace.
- Development and delivery of a “Workers’ Rights Educational Program” where workers learn about and obtain education materials on employment standards and receive one-on-one support with their workplace problems.
- Development and distribution of educational resources on rights in the workplace.
- Raising awareness of issues facing low-wage workers and workers in precarious employment through workshops, public presentations and media work.
