Canada, the United States and Australia are currently engaged in a global competition for skilled workers.  But recent research has revealed there are varying degrees of success in realizing the potential of highly skilled immigrants.

The Institute for Research on Public Policy joins Maytree in inviting you to a policy discussion with:

  • Demetrios G. Papademetriou, president of Migration Policy Institute, a Washington-based think tank and a global leader on migration research;
  • Lesleyanne Hawthorne, associate dean at the University of Melbourne and author of a recent IRPP study comparing the employment outcomes of skilled immigrants in Canada and Australia; and
  • Naomi Alboim, adviser to the Maytree Foundation and vice chair of the Policy Forum at the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University.

These prominent speakers will briefly describe the immigration policies for skilled immigrants in Canada, the U.S and Australia, compare labour market outcomes, and suggest how immigration policies in the three countries have contributed to skilled migrants' successes or failures. They will conclude by identifying trends that they think will impact future immigration policy, with an emphasis on implications for Canada.
